Artist Statement

I am the youngest child in a family with eight children, and I grew up in a home day care center run by my mother. These two factors heavily influenced my development as a child, and subsequently as an artist. Rather than communicating verbally on my own, I often relied on others who were older than me to interpret my actions and moods. Meanwhile, I focused on developing my senses of sight and hearing. It was by quietly observing my surroundings that I was able to dissect and make sense of the world around me. I am drawn to time-based media because it can serve as an outlet of my reflections and experiences as I experience them myself.

My films serve as a way for me to take my observations and subjective experiences and reflect them back to the world. I ask the viewer to interpret and identify with how I have seen the world, and also with how a child might see and experience the world. The quality that I associate with my film and video work is a meditative tone, focusing intently on my subject matter. I often make use of audio commentary to both compliment and contrast with the image. In this way my films are like intimate conversations to which the viewer is allowed to listen.

In recent years I have taken an interest in other forms of expression such as photography, animation and interactive media. In my photographs, I create otherworldly landscapes for the viewer to investigate, often using primitive equipment and techniques. My animation and interactive work is more playful in nature, featuring bright visuals that can give way to enlightening experiences.
